Equality Code and Protected Characteristics at New Swannington Primary School

We work to ensure that our children understand that:

At New Swannington, we actively promote these in our curriculum and work to embed them into our ethos.

Teaching and learning about protected characteristics is fully integrated into our PSHCE curriculum (SCARF) through age-appropriate content across the SCARF spiral curriculum.

We do not expect pupils to be able to list all the protected characteristics. We do expect them to be able to show an understanding of the world they are growing up in and live alongside and show respect for, a diverse range of people.

We also share books as class texts or in assemblies over the course of the year to encourage positive and guided discussion of the protected characteristics.

At New Swannington, we strive to create an environment where children can share their opinions and ask questions.

The Equality Act became law in 2010. It covers everyone in Britain and protects people from discrimination, harassment and victimisation. Everyone in Britain is protected. This is because the Equality Act protects people against discrimination because of the protected characteristics that we all have.
