Enjoy, Learn, Achieve

Year 6

Welcome to Year 6.

Our class teacher is Mr Skinner and our LSA is Mrs Uzzell.  Lots of other adults work with us in school too including Miss Steadman who helps teach PE and Mr Chulan who will be teaching ICT.

In Year 6, we work hard to ensure that we are all prepared for our move up to high school.  This includes ensuring that we are confident with our basic literacy and maths skills, especially reading.  Reading is the most important skill we work on in class and we read a wide range of new and exciting books in both Guided Reading and as a class reader.

We are lucky to study some really interesting topics in Year 6 including WW2, the Vikings, Electricity and Charles Darwin and Evolution.  Hopefully you will all find something of interest over the course of the year.  We also continue to learn about other subjects such as Music (Mr Skinner has even been known to sing occasionally!), DT, RE and French.  We also value Art a lot and ensure that we do this every week.  It is important that you are all able to express your creative skills alongside the more traditional subjects and you will have lots of opportunities to develop your drawing, sketching and painting skills.

Obviously PE is a favourite subject of Mr Skinner.  He will often take you outside no matter what the weather, so you must make sure you always have your full PE kit with you in school.  This includes a jacket as he will often take you outside even if it's raining.  We get to learn about some old favourites like Rounders and Badminton but also learn some new sports like Lacrosse.

Although this year is very different to previous ones, we are still hoping to make your final year at New Swannington as enjoyable and memorable as possible.  We know you were all looking forward to going to Red Ridge and it's a real shame that the trip was cancelled.  However, hopefully we will still have the chance to do other things and go on other trips later in the year.  Even if we are unable to do this, we will still try and make memories in other ways as we all know how special your last year at primary school is.
