Science

Hello my name is Mrs Ferwerda and I have the pleasure of leading Science across the school at New Swannington.

At New Swannington, we follow the Plymouth Science scheme of work which is designed around the National Curriculum statements for knowledge, working scientifically and scientific enquiry.

In lessons, teachers create a sense of excitement and passion about the subject. Our children thoroughly enjoy their Science lessons, especially practical and investigative work.

Teachers develop pupils’ curiosity, enjoyment, skills and a growing understanding of science knowledge through an approach whereby children raise questions and investigate the world in which they live.

As well as teaching the foundational subject knowledge, we also teach our children key scientific enquiry skills. We encourage children to explain what is occurring, predict how things behave and analyse their findings. We want our children to remember their science lessons in our school, to cherish these memories and embrace the scientific opportunities they are presented with.

Science begins in the Early Years Foundation Stage, we build the curriculum from EYFS to Year 6. Children in the early years develop their scientific understanding through the Natural World strand and the characteristics of effective learning.

Within these areas of the curriculum, children learn about scientific principles and methods and discover scientific knowledge for themselves through their own investigations using open-ended resources both inside and in the outside area.

Children are encouraged to make observations and ask questions. They are given opportunities to test out their ideas and to discover their own explanations. They are taught how to look closely at change, patterns, similarities and differences and how to use resources such as information books to find out more.

Children explore different ways of recording their findings such as through drawing, writing, photographs or models.

Science lessons in Key Stage 1 and 2 at New Swannington are taught once a week and include plenty of opportunity for practical investigations. .

To coincide with British Science week, we hold our own Science week. Here, the children have the opportunity to carry out various hands-on investigations and experiments and take part in exciting, interactive activities.

We love to take our Science lessons outside the classroom and we enjoy exploring the natural world around us in our beautiful school grounds and our Forest School area.

Meet Our Science Ambassadors

Hello I am Mia and I enjoy Science. I love experiments because you can find out things that you didn’t know before.  Science is useful in a variety of careers.  If you are a baker, you need to know the science behind it to make a solid.  I am looking forward to supporting and organising the Science Fair.

Hello there, I am Monty and I love Science.  I love Science because it is practical and you get to move around and figure things out. Science will be useful in my future career as a farmer because I need to care for the animals. I am looking forward to seeing all the different experiments at the school Science Fair.
